The unfortunate issue with bad front lower ball joints is per service manual the main battery has to be removed before you can remove the bolt attaching the lower control arm (bolt is installed from the rear and battery is in the way). And the bolt is recommended to be installed in the original orientation. If the ball joints were replaceable that would be much easier for DIY mechanics.

Bosch dont know what they are doing. They think they know but in reality they dont. All they know is how to check suspension which any shop can do. They don't know how to diagnose Electrical issues and bring the car to tesla and charge the customer double 😂😂😂

Not surprising tbh. Great tech & got a jump on other manufacturers but typical American car build quality. Even now I don't rate them that well (on quality) but hopefully next generation Tesla improve the quality. Otherwise as other 'quality' manufacturers catch up on the EV tech side of things, Tesla could end up irrelevant.

In fact, it is a car almost 10 years old, driven in a country with snowy winters with salty roads. So taken that in consideration, not that bad at all. If you compare to videos from the Dutch Autoweek with their high mileage cars, a lot of other fancy cars have their week points.

The most important video on EVs ever. The problem is, that you need to go to an independent shop like that. And there aren’t many of them. And Tesla won’t investigate and tell you that stuff. 2014 model S owner. This will be a problem in time

OK, on the "outside parts" like suspension, braking wires, control arms corrosion is normal. But there are many spots you shouldn't find dirt, moisture and rust. I remember my 1988 7 series BMW. I had it till 2009 and it was clean and dry like from the factory under every cover. I think Tesla should take more care to seal up everything right. Maybe they already do, but in 2013 they obviously didn't. Nice and informative video, most people showing only the good side of their cars.

@1981jwb even if the structure is ok, is not normal for the suspension and direction spare parts to rust. It is ok for the rubber gaskets or bushings to get old in time, but not for the metal parts to rust. There is too much mud in the places where should not be and electrical wires not very well isolated. I don’t know, maybe I was just lucky with mine. Maybe is normal!

300,000 km 180,000 miles is not that far. Particularly for an EV which is generally kinder to its components than a fossil vehicles. It having avoided the usual frequent visits to garages that fossil cars suffer from has 2 results firstly a lot of small jobs will have not been spotted. However also a lot of damage that mechanics usually cause when "servicing" your car.

Hey Bjorn, Nassir surely seems as though he knows his stuff. The Model S has held up well in the Norwegian Salt. Not as well as my 200K mile (320k km) 1999 Mustang GT, but then again it has lived all its life in the San Francisco Bay Area. There are many early Model S cars in California which still seem like new (except for the door handles).

Tools and parts? You don't need tools to find bad design or bad quality parts and rust. You need to see people in Eastern Europe how they fix Teslas, rebuilding Tesla engines, swapping batteries bettwen cars, replacing bad modules inside the battery, hacking Tesla software like Windows XP. And this cars are 100% from auction, a lot of them totaled. In US you have only 2 options: buy a new one or sale the old one. It's called business or something like that.

Will be interesting to see the quote. For a more common vehicle, I might guess a $5K bill for the parts shown w/ labor, but maybe $10K for a Tesla, given high parts costs. The front condenser and radiator changes I would skip since the pebble hits are just to the fins which doesn't cause leaks. Perhaps spray them clear from behind and bend back any which obstruct airflow. If the AC refrigerant is truly leaking (TBD), it looks like just cleaning and replacing the O-rings at the fittings would fix it. That year might have used common R-134A refrigerant vs the new and pricey R-1234yc. The brake tubes, I would clean and if the metal isn't pitted w/ corrosion, coat w/ quality paint (Zn-Cr primer). I wouldn't fuss with the rear lower ball joints. The play is very minimal so much life left in them and you would never notice it unless going airborne over railroad tracks. I wouldn't fuss with the wiper controls due to the aluminum oxide. Just clean and paint if worried about it. Definitely change the rusted steering coupler since very dangerous as is. Looks like a part designed for only CA/AZ.

Just had to repair suspension rear halfshaft on my S85 of 2013... cost a little less than 1000€. But the car feels like new now, pretty amazing. Besides the "under warranty" repairs (drivetrain and battery) I had almost the same problem with the handles on the right side of the car, actually mine would not come out at all. Repair was around 300€, they had to redo the wiring and to change the control unit. After 250.000km and 7+ years it's really low cost maintenance.

Many manufacturers have. Around 2000, M-B starting forming lower control arms of thin sheet-metal which rusts thru from the inside. They look fine until they break to splay the front wheel. Fortunately, most suspension and steering failures occur when turning tight going slow, like in parking lots, since forces are highest there.

@bjørn Nyland have you heard that Danish Tesla model S owners suing Tesla, for slow charging? This was introduced in SW from 2019 and affect models from 2013-15.

This is very intesting to me, since I am now looking to buy my first car and I decided to go with a used ev. Now I am considering whether I should get something like a 2018 ioniq or maybe an older tesla model s or even a model 3 if the used market price comes down a bit, although the 20-25k euro model 2 might also stir things up a bit for people like me.

No big surprise here! We all knew about the poor and inadequate rust protection... Any 7 year old Mercedes with 350.000 km on the clock would display the same issues.

I’m impressed by how well this technician knows the Model S and can describe the issues in a foreign language. Kudos to him! How quick and easy can independent shops get parts from Tesla in Norway? Or do they buy directly from the parts manufacturer?

The"wet" traces/stains on the AC system/joints are actually compressor lubrication oil that leaves with the refrigerant the AC cycle thorugh the leaks. Small leaks are difficult to find through pressure testing. It is better to use an electronic leak detector or a Helium/Hydrogen leak detection system that might give you also an idea of the leak rate in g/years.

Hard winters, snow, rain and salt, I think Tesla survived and did well. But still they could have closed the holes which allows the dirt and mud gets inside.

In the UK the cheapest Tesla Model S' are around £30k (354680 NOK) for a 2013/14. Quite expensive for second hand; will be interesting to see what repair costs would be for a refresh on something that old
